It’s me who killed it

Have you ever been a member of a sports team? Do you remember playing with your friends when you were a kid? No doubt, there should have been  an “individualist” in the group, a guy that once he got the ball he would only think of how to score himself rather than pass it to anyone else around him.

The “individualist”, the “self – seeker”,  the person who focuses on his own interests and on how to feed his ego.

Unfortunately, I have noticed that something similar happens in the case of music ensembles and groups, meaning that  there is always a person who tries to feed his ego either by playing louder in order to be more audible or by insisting on his own tuning. “The tuner says  that I am correct!”, you may have listened to someone screaming. On other occasions he is trying to stand out by complaining or by attempting to impose his own musical opinion : “What is he talking about, pal ??!! Never mind, let him say whatever he wants”.

In any ensemble, there is only one person in charge : the conductor.
Whether you respect him or not, you have to do as he says even if it is wrong. He is the coach of the team, the  commander of the stage. If you insist that he is wrong, you may, of course, discuss the matter with him, provided that your arguments are better than his. In cases that the ensemble is too small to have a conductor, there is a magical word to do the job : dialogue. Under all circumstances, you should care about doing your job well rather than criticizing others.

In music you have to be a team player,
not an individualist.

When playing with an ensemble, you have to think of “us” rather than “me”. Fade out when you don’t have a significant role at a certain point in a piece. Be humble while performing. Admit that you may be wrong. When you see a fortissimo, this does not mean that your sound is supposed to cover everybody else…Of course there is a reason for the  fortissimo to be there and it is your job to find this reason out. Listen to the music around you because you are part of it, each note of yours interacts with other notes within the ensemble. Nothing is composed by accident.

Even in the case of a solo piece you are creating music by interacting with pause and silence. You need the pause to cover your sound so as for the sound to come out again and cover the silence. As darkness exists due to the lack of light, so pause / silence exists  due to the lack of sound.

In this sense, everything leads to the concept  of chamber music itself. In my opinion, chamber music is the most important course to be taught, so as for the students to get familiar with the principles of team spirit and  learn how to perform together with other players in various ensembles.  Unfortunately, no one pays the necessary attention to the course of chamber music.

If you want your team to win then :

• Think of “us”.
• Do not be an individualist.
• Do not feed your ego, the more you do so the more food it will be craving for.
• Yes, you may be wrong sometimes.
• Listen to what is going on around you and adjust your sound. WE DON’T WANT to listen to you above everybody else.
• Music is an art, not a game of power.

If you are willing to push your ego away, your team is going to win.

Be careful though : ego takes control without your noticing it, so ,  when the time comes for you to speak, think twice and decide if this is going to be “me” or “us”.

Εχεις παίξει σε κάποια ομάδα ; Θυμάσαι όταν ήσουν μικρός και έπαιζες με τους φίλους σου ; Σίγουρα υπήρχε πάντα στην παρέα ο “ατομιστής”, αυτός που όταν έπαιρνε την μπάλα δεν έκανε πάσα σε κανέναν και ήθελε να σκοράρει μόνος του.

Δυστυχώς έχω παρατηρήσει ότι αυτό συμβαίνει και σε διάφορα μουσικά σύνολα ή μουσικές ομάδες. Υπάρχει πάντα κάποιος που θέλει να δώσει τροφή στο εγώ του, είτε με το να παίζει πιο δυνατά για να ακουστεί, είτε με το να επιμένει στο κούρδισμα του. “Μα, το κουρδιστήρι λέει ότι είμαι ο σωστός” θα έχετε ακούσει κάποιον να φωνάζει. Άλλες φορές με τις μουσικές του απόψεις, άλλες με την γκρίνια του. “Τι λέει ρε αυτός” ή “Αααα καλά, άσ’ τον να λέει”.

Ένας κάνει κουμάντο σε οποιοδήποτε σύνολο, ο μαέστρος. Είτε τον σέβεσαι είτε όχι θα κάνεις αυτό που σου λέει ακόμα και εάν είναι λάθος, αυτός κάνει κουμάντο στην σκηνή. Είναι ο προπονητής της ομάδας. Άμα επιμένεις ότι κάνει λάθος φυσικά το συζητάς μαζί του αλλά πρέπει να έχεις καλύτερα επιχειρήματα από αυτόν. Όταν όμως δεν χρειάζεται μαέστρος γιατί το σύνολο είναι μικρό τότε υπάρχει η απίστευτη λέξη ΔΙΑΛΟΓΟΣ. Σε κάθε περίπτωση εσύ πρέπει να κάνεις σωστά την δουλειά σου και όχι να κρίνεις τους άλλους.

Στην μουσική πρέπει να είσαι ομαδικός παίχτης όχι ατομιστής.

Σκέψου το “εμείς” και όχι το “εγώ” όταν παίζεις με ένα σύνολο. Φύγε, σβήσε όταν δεν είσαι σημαντικός σε εκείνο το σημείο της μουσικής. Να παραδέχεσαι ότι κάνεις λάθος. Να είσαι ταπεινός όταν παίζεις. Όταν βλέπεις  fortissimo δεν σημαίνει σκεπάζω με τον ήχο μου όλους τους υπόλοιπους, ναι υπάρχει λόγος που λέει fortissimo και δουλειά σου είναι να βρεις τον λόγο. Άκου γύρω σου την μουσική, είσαι μέρος της, κάθε νότα σου αλληλεπιδρά με κάποια άλλη μέσα στο σύνολο. Τίποτα δεν είναι τυχαία γραμμένο.

Ακόμα και σε σόλο κομμάτι παίζεις μουσική με την ησυχία, την παύση. Την θες αυτή την παύση για να σκεπάσει τον ήχο σου και μετά να ξανά βγει ο ήχος να σκεπάσει την ησυχία. Όπως το σκοτάδι υπάρχει λόγο έλλειψης φωτός έτσι και η ησυχία/παύση υπάρχει λόγο έλλειψης ήχου.

Και όλα φτάνουν στην αρχή που είναι η μουσική δωματίου. Το πιο σημαντικό κατά την άποψη μου μάθημα που δυστυχώς δεν του δίνεται η απαραίτητη προσοχή. Θα πρέπει ο μαθητής να μάθει να παίζει μαζί με άλλους μουσικούς σε διάφορα σύνολα, να μάθει τις αξίες του ομαδικού παίχτη.

Εάν θες να κερδίσει η ομάδα σου τότε,

• Σκέψου το “εμείς”.
• Μην είσαι ατομιστής
• Μην τρέφεις το “εγώ” σου, όσο το τρέφεις τόσο περισσότερο θα θέλει.
• Ναι, μπορεί να κάνεις λάθος.
• Άκου γύρω σου τι παίζουν και προσάρμοσε τον ήχο σου. ΔΕΝ ΘΕΛΟΥΜΕ να σε ακούσουμε πιο δυνατά από όλους.
• Η μουσική δεν είναι παιχνίδι δύναμης, είναι τέχνη.

Εάν είσαι διατεθειμένος να πετάξεις το εγώ σου μακριά τότε η ομάδα σου θα κερδίσει.

Αλλά πρόσεχε το εγώ παίρνει τον έλεγχο χωρίς να το καταλάβεις, έτσι όταν θα έρθει η στιγμή να μιλήσεις ξανασκέψου και δεν ποιος θα μιλήσει το εγώ ή το εμείς !
