Undoubtedly the tuner is something that every musician should have always with him/her, often use it as a guide during practice. This small device can create a big problem in your tuning if you do not use it correctly.
The problem starts when the musician plays music with his/her eyes rather than his/her ears. What I mean by saying “playing with his/her eyes”? Simply, because as humans we have the wonderful sense of sight we tend to do everything using this sense, our eyes read information, send this information to the brain and thus we have knowledge of things around us.
To end up ! Many musicians waiting for the green light from the tuner to see that are properly tuned, that is to see with their own eyes the tuner and not listen. Practicing in this way slowly and without the musician to understand starts (the musician) to be addicted to the tuner, feel out of tune, have tense in his/her playing and in many cases can not understand if he/she is correct within an ensemble.
Incidentally, to have the tuner on during an ensemble rehearsal or concert is the biggest mistake a musician can do. It doesn’t matter if you are correct (using tuner) if the whole ensemble is flat or sharp, you will sound wrong. Again, you need to use your ears and not your eyes (on the tuner) to be correct. I don’t mean that playing out of tune is correct but use your ears to adjust your tuning.
The correct way to use the tuner is the one that you put above all what you hear and let the tuner to guide the ear to correct tuning.
“Play with your ears, not with your eyes “
A good exercise to improve your ears and intonation :
- Play a scale with the tuner off, hear very well if you’re in tune. If you’re not sure, you play again the same scale.
- Sing/play/buzz the scale with the tuner on, careful be as correct as possible. The ears are wide open, the tuner is your guide.
- Again play the scale with the instrument, tuner on, eyes closed, but only in case of doubt look at the tuner. Concentrate on what you hear. Did you hear the incorrect pitches ?
Doing this exercise with different scales/etudes/solo pieces, a lot of patience and perseverance the musician will start to have a better intonation, and learns to play with his/her ears and not with his/her eyes.

The difficulty I am having is getting the correct scale set in my mind. I’ve been learning so many of them (Niavent, Sambah, Hitzaz, Segiah… that it’s hard to keep in mind which accidentals are part of the scale! đ But I totally agree with you!
The moment when scales will be in your head you are done. Everything you want to play it will be in your hands !
Play with your ears NOT with your eyes is a good way to think. I see so many student worried about being in tune they forget everything else. When I know I’m out of tune I put tuner on close my eyes play the note, listen then open my eyes, and when teaching don’t let the student look at the tuner make them listen and play the note up to 5-6 times so the note gets into the brain.
Dear Brian,
That’s a great way to make sure you use your ears and not your eyes.
Thank you for your comment.
